Mumbai: The 100th birth anniversary of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray has reignited political tensions in Maharashtra, with senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Sanjay Raut launching a sharp attack on the BJP and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. As tribute events unfold across the state, the focus has once again shifted to Balasaheb’s ideology and the deep rift within the Shiv Sena.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion by sharing a message on social media, remembering Balasaheb as a towering leader who influenced Maharashtra and inspired generations. The tribute, however, did not go uncontested. Responding strongly, Sanjay Raut questioned the sincerity behind the homage.
Raut said that while Balasaheb is being publicly praised, the political actions taken after his death tell a different story. He argued that the same forces claiming respect for Balasaheb were responsible for dividing the Shiv Sena, a party built by the Sena founder with years of struggle and sacrifice.
Taking a direct swipe, Raut asked whether the Prime Minister now sees guidance in Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who emerged as the leader of a separate faction after the party split. According to Raut, admiration for Balasaheb cannot coexist with decisions that weakened the organisation he created.
Raut also accused Eknath Shinde of abandoning the core values that Balasaheb stood for. He said Balasaheb believed in strength through unity—be it for Marathi pride, Hindu identity, or standing up to injustice. That unity, Raut claimed, gave Maharashtra the courage to face difficult times.
Highlighting Balasaheb’s impact on ordinary people, Raut said the Sena founder transformed the common citizen into a confident and fearless voice. “That is why Balasaheb Thackeray remains alive in the hearts of people even after a hundred years,” he said.
