What was meant to be a joyous wedding celebration in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed after a dispute over a ceremonial cash gift allegedly triggered firing, violence and brutal assault, leaving the groom’s brother seriously injured.
The shocking incident took place in Husainpur village under the Kunwargaon police station area in Badaun during the early hours of Thursday, just moments before the wedding rituals were set to begin.
According to police, the wedding procession for the daughter of local resident Prem Singh had arrived on Wednesday night, and the families were preparing for the sacred wedding rounds when a violent altercation broke out.
Demand for ₹21,000 ‘Neg’ Sparks Violent Clash
Police said that a group of men arrived in a Bolero vehicle and demanded ₹21,000 as ‘neg’, a customary ceremonial gift often exchanged during weddings. However, the bride’s family reportedly offered ₹2,100, leading to a fierce argument.
The disagreement soon spiralled out of control as the accused allegedly began creating a disturbance and misbehaving with wedding guests.
In a dramatic escalation, the group allegedly opened fire using illegal weapons, triggering panic and stampede-like chaos at the venue.
Groom’s Brother Beaten, Guests Panic as Gunshots Ring Out
Amid the violent confrontation, the groom’s brother Gaurav was allegedly attacked with sticks and suffered serious injuries. Several other guests were also reportedly assaulted during the attack.
The sudden gunfire sent fear through the wedding gathering, with family members and guests scrambling for safety as the ceremony collapsed into violence.
The injured were immediately rushed to hospital, where Gaurav remains under treatment.
Police Arrest Six, Illegal Weapons Recovered
After receiving information about the violence, police rushed to the scene and arrested six accused persons.
During the operation, authorities recovered:
- Two illegal country-made pistols
- Live cartridges
- Sticks
- Scissors
- Bolero vehicle used in the incident
The swift police action prevented the situation from worsening further.
FIR Registered Under Serious Charges
Circle Officer Rajneesh Kumar Upadhyay confirmed that the violence erupted over the dispute regarding the “neg” demand.
Police have registered an FIR under serious charges against the accused, who were later produced before the court. Further legal proceedings are underway.
