Former IB Special Director Anurag Kumar Appointed Delhi Police Commissioner, Replaces Satish Golcha

The Central government on Friday appointed senior IPS officer and former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director Anurag Kumar as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, bringing a change in the leadership of the national capital’s police force.

The appointment comes a day after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Kumar’s repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent AGMUT cadre. He will now take charge as Delhi Police Commissioner, succeeding Satish Golcha, who had been heading the force since August last year.

The decision also marks an early change in Delhi Police leadership, as Golcha was originally due to remain in office until his retirement in April 2027. Following the transition, he is expected to report to the office of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor.

Anurag Kumar brings more than three decades of experience in policing, intelligence gathering and internal security. During his tenure with the Intelligence Bureau, he handled several sensitive assignments related to national security, counter-terrorism operations and intelligence coordination.

An engineering graduate by qualification, Kumar has been recognised for his distinguished service in the police force. He received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and was later awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016 for his contributions to law enforcement and national security.

With Kumar taking charge, Delhi Police is expected to continue focusing on strengthening policing, intelligence-led operations, crime prevention and public security in the national capital.
