Chennai: In a significant development in the Anna University sexual assault case, the Chennai Mahila Court on Wednesday convicted the accused, Gnanasekaran, for sexually abusing a 19-year-old student on the university campus in December 2024. The court observed that the “prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt,” delivering long-awaited justice to the survivor.

The disturbing incident occurred on December 23, 2024, when the survivor, a second-year engineering student, was speaking to her male friend behind one of the campus buildings at around 8 pm. Gnanasekaran, an outsider, allegedly trespassed into the premises, confronted the duo, and threatened them before physically assaulting the male student. He then forced the young woman to perform sexual acts and reportedly demanded that she continue meeting him.

The very next day, the survivor filed a complaint at the Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station, prompting swift action. A case was registered, and Gnanasekaran was arrested shortly thereafter.
