Social activist Anna Hazare has voiced scathing remarks on the arrest of his former mentee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in the liquor policy case, stating, “I told him many times to avoid liquor, but he made the policy for more money.” Hazare’s comments come amidst a wave of support from opposition leaders for Kejriwal.

Hazare expressed deep disappointment, saying, “I am very saddened that a man like Arvind Kejriwal, who used to work with me and had raised his voice against liquor, today he is preparing liquor policy.” He emphasized that any further actions should adhere to the law.

As a prominent figure in the 2011 anti-corruption movement, Hazare’s association with AAP’s emergence didn’t translate into political alignment, although he initially endorsed the party. However, he has since criticized AAP on various fronts, with Kejriwal and his party refraining from direct rebuttals.

This isn’t the first instance of Hazare’s disapproval of the policy. In 2022, he wrote a letter to Kejriwal expressing his “pain” over the matter, remarking, “Like liquor, power too intoxicates. You are intoxicated by power, it seems.”

Despite the arrest, AAP has affirmed that Kejriwal will continue as Delhi Chief Minister. Kejriwal is expected to challenge the arrest in a trial court, following protocol. After spending the night at the ED’s office, he will appear before a special court handling the probe agency’s cases.
