In a major development in the ongoing financial investigation, Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in New Delhi for a second round of questioning in connection with an alleged large-scale bank fraud and money laundering case.
The 66-year-old industrialist reached the central Delhi office of the federal agency around 10:30 am on Thursday. Officials confirmed that his statement would be recorded under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Probe Linked to Rs 40,000 Crore Alleged Fraud
The investigation revolves around allegations of bank loan irregularities exceeding Rs 40,000 crore involving Reliance Communications (RCOM), a company under the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG).
According to officials, multiple group firms are under scrutiny for suspected financial mismanagement, diversion of funds and violation of lending norms. Ambani was previously questioned by the ED in August 2025 as part of the same probe.
SIT Formed After Supreme Court Directions
The ED recently constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine various alleged financial irregularities linked to ADAG companies. The formation of the SIT reportedly followed directions issued by the Supreme Court of India, which is monitoring aspects of the case.
Sources indicate that investigators are analysing loan transactions, fund utilisation patterns and possible money trails linked to the alleged fraud.
Mumbai Property ‘Abode’ Attached
In a parallel action, the ED on Wednesday provisionally attached Ambani’s Mumbai residence, ‘Abode’, valued at approximately Rs 3,716 crore, under the anti-money laundering framework. The attachment is part of efforts to secure assets allegedly linked to proceeds of crime.
The agency has informed the apex court that it has registered three separate money laundering cases against entities of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group to examine allegations of loan fraud and other financial irregularities.
Timeline of Key Developments
August 2025 – First round of questioning by ED
February 2026 – Second round of questioning
2026 – Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed following directions from the Supreme Court of India
Legal Battle Intensifies
The fresh questioning signals that the investigation has entered a deeper phase, with authorities seeking detailed clarification on financial transactions and corporate decisions.
While Ambani has not publicly commented on the latest round of interrogation, the case is expected to witness further legal proceedings in the coming months as the ED continues to trace assets and examine financial records.
