Chandigarh: The family of Amritpal Singh, the leader of the separatist group ‘Waris Punjab De’ and independent Member of Parliament, was placed under house arrest by Punjab Police on Tuesday. This move comes in the wake of growing law and order concerns following reports of Singh’s alleged involvement in a protest organized by the Quami Insaaf Morcha.
Tarsem Singh, the father of Amritpal Singh, confirmed the development and expressed his outrage over the police action. He claimed that both he and his family were confined to their residence as a preventive measure. According to Tarsem Singh, the police cited intelligence reports linking him to the Quami Insaaf Morcha protest as the reason for the house arrest.
In a statement, Tarsem Singh said, “Police have been deployed here, and I have been told that I have been placed under house arrest. On asking the police the reason behind it, I was told that this was done based on the information that I was going to take part in a protest by Quami Insaaf Morcha. All members of the household have been placed under house arrest. Punjab Police is doing this.”
While the family raised concerns about the legality of the action, Punjab Police defended their decision. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Arun Sharma explained that the deployment of forces was to ensure the maintenance of law and order. He added, “To ensure law and order stability, police have been deployed as per orders from senior officers. Family members of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, who reportedly joined the Quami Insaaf Morcha protest today, have all been placed under house arrest.”
