Amit Shah Becomes Longest-Serving Union Home Minister, Marks Milestone on Article 370 Abrogation Anniversary

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a new record by becoming the longest-serving Home Minister in India’s history, completing 2,258 days in office as of August 5, 2025. His tenure, which began on May 30, 2019, has now exceeded that of veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, who held the post for 2,256 days between 1998 and 2004.

This milestone is particularly significant as it falls on the same date Shah announced the historic abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir — a decision that redefined the political and constitutional structure of the region.

Shah’s tenure has also outlasted that of Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant, who served for six years and 56 days starting in 1955. Known for his administrative strength and political acumen, Shah has played a central role in shaping the internal security landscape of the country during his time in office.

Apart from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Amit Shah also holds charge of the Ministry of Cooperation, making him India’s first-ever Cooperation Minister. His earlier political journey includes serving as Gujarat’s Home Minister and the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Under his leadership, India has seen decisive action on internal security. Kashmir witnessed a massive drop in stone-pelting incidents, and Naxal-affected regions have reported a sharp reduction in extremist violence. His approach has earned praise within the NDA for firm governance and effective policy implementation.
