New Delhi: Marking the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, alleging that it deliberately neglected the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Iron Man of India.

Speaking at an event commemorating Patel’s birth anniversary, Shah said the Congress failed to honour Patel’s contributions to the nation after independence and withheld due recognition for decades.

“Unfortunately, after Sardar Patel’s death after independence, the Congress party spared no effort to forget him. There was a 41-year delay in awarding the Bharat Ratna to a great personality like Sardar Patel, solely due to the Congress party’s distinct lack of respect for him,” Shah said.

The Home Minister added that for many years, the country did not have a proper memorial dedicated to Patel despite his monumental role in integrating over 500 princely states into the Indian Union.

“For a great personality like Sardar Patel, neither a samadhi nor a memorial was built in the entire country,” he noted.

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contribution to restoring Patel’s rightful place in national consciousness, Shah said it was under Modi’s leadership as Gujarat Chief Minister that a lasting tribute was created.

“When Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he commissioned the Statue of Unity and built the Sardar Patel Memorial, a magnificent monument that has become famous worldwide,” Shah stated.
