Kuala Lumpur: Controversial Islamic preacher and fugitive Zakir Naik has strongly denied social media rumours claiming he is suffering from AIDS, after BJP leader Amit Malviya amplified the claim by calling it “true.”

Speaking to Free Malaysia Today, Naik dismissed the allegations outright. “This is rubbish, this is fake news,” he said, asserting that he is in good health and accusing detractors of trying to damage his reputation.

His lawyer, Akbaruddin, said the spread of such misinformation was deliberate. “Fake news has been used as a weapon to defame Naik,” he told the publication, adding that Naik plans to take legal action against those behind the rumours. He confirmed Naik was in “completely normal” health during their last meeting.

Naik fled India for Malaysia in 2017 after being accused of money laundering, delivering inflammatory speeches, promoting terrorism, and involvement in a terror funding case. He remains wanted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In 2019, the ED filed a chargesheet claiming Naik owned assets worth over ₹193 crore, with more than ₹50 crore already seized. Despite these charges, Naik portrays himself as a preacher of peace, though critics argue his speeches have promoted division and violence.
