Pune: In a significant breakthrough, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced on Saturday that the prime accused in the Pune rape case, who had been evading arrest since Tuesday, was apprehended with the help of drone technology. The accused, identified as Dattatray Ramdas Gade, was found hiding in a sugarcane field and was captured after an intensive search operation.

Addressing the media, Pawar stated, “The accused was hiding in a sugarcane farm, and we utilized drone surveillance to locate and arrest him. He was in such a desperate state that he attempted to die by suicide. However, our teams acted swiftly to ensure his capture. I want to assure the public that such incidents will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against the perpetrators.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the survivor, a working woman, was waiting at a bus stop to return to her hometown of Phaltan, approximately 100 km from Pune. The accused allegedly approached her under the pretext of helping her find her bus, claiming it was parked at a different location. He then led her to a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Shivsahi bus parked in the depot, where the crime was committed.

Following the incident, Gade went into hiding, prompting a massive manhunt by the police. The use of drone technology proved crucial in tracking him down in the dense sugarcane fields, where traditional search methods would have been challenging.
