Hyderabad: AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has announced that his party will support the Opposition candidate, former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, in the upcoming vice-presidential election.
Owaisi said that Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy personally reached out to him seeking AIMIM’s backing. “@TelanganaCMO spoke to me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will extend its support to Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist. I also spoke to Justice Reddy and expressed our best wishes to him,” Owaisi wrote on X.
The election was triggered after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned unexpectedly. Voting to elect his successor will be held on September 9. The NDA has fielded Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, while the Opposition has nominated Justice Reddy.
The Vice President of India is chosen through an indirect election by an electoral college consisting of all elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Unlike presidential polls, state legislatures play no role in this process. Voting is carried out by secret ballot using the proportional representation system with a single transferable vote, and MPs are not bound by a party whip.
The NDA currently commands a majority with 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 133 in the Rajya Sabha, giving it a combined strength of 426 lawmakers. This number is sufficient to secure victory for its nominee,
