Tianjin: On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached out to Modi over a phone call on Saturday, seeking India’s continued backing for peace efforts.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Zelenskyy held a detailed conversation on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, humanitarian challenges, and the broader need to restore stability. “We exchanged views on the conflict, its humanitarian aspects, and the road ahead for peace. India fully supports all genuine efforts to bring stability,” Modi posted on X after the call.
Zelenskyy, in his own statement, said he briefed Modi on his recent discussions in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders. He described those talks as “productive and important,” while noting that Moscow had shown “no positive signal” in recent weeks. Instead, he accused Russia of carrying out “cynical strikes” on civilian areas, resulting in dozens of deaths. “I am grateful to the Prime Minister for his condolences to the families of the victims,” he added.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that the path to ending the war must begin with an immediate ceasefire. “It is impossible to speak about peace while our communities remain under constant fire. India’s role is vital, and we hope Prime Minister Modi will convey the necessary signals during his meetings in China,” Zelenskyy said.
He also expressed interest in holding a face-to-face meeting with Modi in the near future.
The call comes at a delicate moment in international diplomacy, with the SCO summit in Tianjin serving as a platform where India, Russia, China, and other regional powers are expected to deliberate on security and economic challenges.
