Mumbai: Political developments in Maharashtra’s Ambernath municipal council took another sharp turn after all twelve Congress councillors, who were earlier suspended by their party, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move comes days after a controversial post-election alignment reshaped power equations in the Thane district civic body.
Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan confirmed the induction late Wednesday, stating that the councillors’ decision was centred on governance and public works rather than political gain. According to Chavan, the councillors felt that aligning with the BJP would help fulfil the commitments they made to voters during the election campaign.
He said the councillors believed the BJP-led administration at the state level was better equipped to ensure faster development, effective governance and fair implementation of civic projects in Ambernath.
The switch follows intense political churn after the municipal council elections held on December 20 produced a fractured verdict. While the Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party, it fell short of a clear majority. This opened the door for post-poll negotiations that resulted in an unexpected alliance between the BJP, Congress and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party under the banner of the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi.
