Activist Anil Galgali demands Govt, BMC to strengthen Mumbai Fire Brigade

Mumbai: Considering the increasing fire incidents in Mumbai every year, there is a need of making Mumbai fire brigade hi-tech. But in a recent RTI report sought by Activist Anil Galgali it came to light that there are 25 per cent posts vacant, which means Mumbai Fire Brigade which is such an important agency of the of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is overloaded with extra work due to the lack of manpower.

Activist Galgali has sought the information of the vacant posts in the Mumbai Fire Brigade.  Replying to the query raised by Galgali Fire Brigade has said that there are all 3694 posts in various 14 types deployed on direct action. Of the 3694 posts, 2760 posts are currently working, while 934 posts are vacant.

The highest numbers of the vacant posts were of Fire fighters. Out of 2340, 604 posts are lying vacant, they were 159 post of driver cum technician, 69 chief fire fighters, 66 junior officers, 17 senior centre officers and 10 centre officers.

The post of Deputy Chief Technical Officer is lying vacant. There are 125 posts of 29 posts in the Mumbai fire Brigade’s workshop, out of which 62 posts are still vacant and 66 posts are staffed. Workshop is important in a fire brigade and has an indirect relationship.

“I was surprised to know that the Mumbai Fire Brigade is such an important agency as its fire incident, house or building collapse, or any incident always fire brigade is deployed in all situations and with shortage of manpower how can the Mumbai Fire Brigade function smoothly. Therefore, I have written a letter to Maharashtra CM, Uddhav Thackeray and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, demanding to give priority to fill the vacant posts at the earliest,” said Galgali.
