New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday claimed a significant victory in India’s ongoing Operation Sindoor, announcing the neutralization of Abdul Rauf Azhar, the brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar. The post shared by the BJP highlighted that Rauf Azhar, one of India’s most wanted terrorists, was involved in multiple major terror attacks, including the 1999 Kandahar plane hijack, the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament, and the 2016 Pathankot airbase assault.

The BJP’s statement further claimed that, alongside Rauf, 14 additional members of the Azhar family were killed in the military strikes targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). However, official confirmation from the Indian Armed Forces or the central government has yet to be issued regarding these reports.

Rauf Azhar was a key figure in the Jaish-e-Mohammed, a group designated as a terrorist organization globally. His involvement in terrorist activities, including his role in the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002, and his association with notorious terrorist leader Omar Sheikh, further cemented his status as a prominent figure in global terrorism.

The US Department of Treasury had sanctioned Abdul Rauf Azhar in December 2010 for his leadership role within JeM. According to the US government, Azhar was a senior commander within the group, actively urging Pakistanis to engage in militant activities, organizing suicide attacks in India, and overseeing JeM’s intelligence operations.
