Mumbai: Keeping in line with its move to declare its Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur in Punjab, Bhagwant Singh Mann as its chief ministerial face in February 20, Punjab assembly polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announces Advocate Amit Palekar as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the February 14 Goa assembly elections.
It may be recalled that the AAP had earlier promised that its Chief Ministerial candidate would be from the Bhandari community, which forms the largest electoral bloc in the coastal State of Goa. The community has given only one Chief Minister – Ravi Naik (a former Congressman who is now with the BJP) in the 60-odd years since Goa’s Liberation in 1961.
New Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal said that Advocate Amit Palekar’s nomination is in keeping with the AAP’s promise of giving Goans an educated Chief Ministerial candidate who is “honest and would take all the State’s communities and classes together”. The AAP chief ministerial candidate would be doing away with the injustice being felt by the community in respect of its political backwardness.
