Building collapses in Kalbadevi; one dies

Mumbai: A 61-year-old man died after a four-storey building collapsed in south Mumbai’s Kalbadevi area on Sunday around 10.30 pm. The deceased, a waste material recycler, has been identified as Sundara Saw. After the incident he was taken to J J Hospital where doctors declared him dead before arrival.

As per the available CCTV footage, the dilapidated Khanderao building collapsed on Saw, when he was sitting near the building and talking on the phone. As per the information of the BMC, the building belonged to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

When News 21, spoke to the local BJP corporator, Aakash Raj Purohit, He said that the major tragedy was averted as the building was evacuated after a portion of the toilet collapsed on Sunday evening.

“Initially the part of the toilet of the building fell, after which fire brigade and police were called. There were around 20 labourers inside the building and all of them were evacuated by the fire brigade. Also, one family from a nearby building was moved as a safety measure”, disclosed Aakash Raj Purohit.

He further said, “However, a man was sitting next to the building while talking on the phone and suddenly the entire building collapsed and he was trapped under the debris. He was rescued and shifted to J J Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.”

Khanderao Building Number 5 was more than four decades old and in dilapidated condition.
