The Taliban in Afghanistan has overthrown the current government and has claimed power. It is said that co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is likely to be the next president of the country. However people in Afghanistan are blaming the US for the chaos for bringing the country in such a mess. President Biden had set 9/11 for the withdrawal of all US troops. But the ‘salwar-clad’ Taliban fighter doesn’t need to gear up in multiple layers of camouflage. Besides, the American withdrawal was “rushed, poorly planned and chaotic”, the stamp of Vietnam clearly marked on the envelope.
Now, over 5000 fresh US troops have been airlifted to Afghanistan to evacuate the American embassy. And Biden is under attack from predecessor Donald Trump and Trump’s secretary of state Mike Pompeo. They blame Biden for everything gone wrong in Afghanistan.
Although, Biden defended the US pullout from Afghanistan today, saying he stood by the policy and that it was time to leave after 20 years of conflict.
“I am president of the United States of America and the buck stops with me,” Biden said in a much-awaited televised address from the White House, after several days of silence on the momentous developments. As scenes of mayhem unfolded in the Afghan capital, Biden said he was “deeply saddened” by the turn of events — and promised to “speak out” on the rights of women now facing a return to Taliban rule. But he was steadfast in insisting he did not regret pulling out America’s troops — despite a torrent of criticism of the chaotic end to two decades of US-led military intervention. “I stand squarely behind my decision,” Biden said. “After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces.”
Talking about, Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban leader freed from a Pakistani jail on the request of the US less than three years ago, has emerged as an “undisputed victor” of the 20-year war in Afghanistan, according to a British media report.
While Haibatullah Akhundzada is the Taliban’s overall leader, Baradar is its political chief and its most public face. He was said to be on his way from his office in Doha, Qatar, to Kabul on Sunday evening.
In a televised statement on the fall of Kabul, he said the Taliban’s real test was only just beginning and that they had to serve the nation, The Guardian newspaper reported on Sunday.-Inputs from PTI
