Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued public notice in newspapers asking people to be careful on 13 Rail Over Bridges (ROB) and avoid overloading it beyond 16 tonnes especially during the processions of the upcoming Ganpati festival. The notice lists 13 ROB’s, with four of them over the Central Railway (CR) and nine of them over the Western Railway (WR) (see list of bridges below).
“These bridges are old and need repairs. While repairs are being planned with multiple stakeholders involved in the process, an appeal was issued as a routine precautionary measure since huge crowds tend to turn up during Ganpati festivals,” additional municipal commissioner P. Velrasu told thenews21. As per the appeal, people are to ensure that the bridge doesn’t load up with over 16 tonnes, the optimum load bearing capacity calculated by a team of private consultants and from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The Currey Road and Chinchpokli ROB’s especially are cited as most vulnerable and people have been asked not to play loud music or dance on it, ensure quick movement and not to crowd up in large numbers on it. The bridges are old and dangerous and are either being repaired or would be taken up for repairs, post-monsoon, the notice said.
Velrasu said that as per the arrangement, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVCL) would be undertaking repairs of the ROB’s with funds from BMC. “While the railways would be conducting repairs on eight ROB’s, the BMC would be taking up repairs of a few bridges like Mahalaxmi and Bandra. Work on repairing a few other bridges is still at the planning stage and work orders have not been issued so far. All the old ROB’s would be phased out in a time bound manner in a few years from now,” Velrasu informed.
