New Delhi: Holding the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih-led government responsible for the death of terror recruiter Yasir Yahya, Bilad al-Sham Media have issued a warning to Male. The group (Bilad al-Sham Media) run by the Maldivian radicals fighting in Syria, warned Male’s administration of consequences over the treatment provided to Yahya.
According to sources, Bilad al-Sham issued a threat to the Maldivian government on August 6, four days after Yahya was pronounced dead by the medical staff at the while undergoing treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Yahya worked as an Arab language teacher at Ahmadiyya School in Male, prior to his arrest in 2017, on allegation of recruiting the Maldivian youths for terrorist activities in Syria and other foreign nations. He was hospitalized at IGMH on July 21, following the deterioration in health due to a hunger strike inside the detention center in suburban Hulhumale.
Alleged to be one of the main recruiters for al-Qaeda, Yahya was considered to be a senior member by Bilad al-Sham Media. Thus, in their threat, the group said that the Maldivian government had treated him very inhumanely and that it was against Islam and the laws of the Male to detain him without any charges or trials against him.
The island nation since 2013 has continued to witness a rising Islamic militancy. The Maldivian security services have revealed previously undisclosed information about the extent of religious extremism in Male, including the increasing number of militants in foreign nations.
In 2019, the Maldivan government claimed to have been planning to bring them back within the next seven months in collaboration with other countries. Profile of most of these militants from Male shows that they were locals of the archipelago’s fishing community – some highly educated, while others reeling under severe economic hardships.
