The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s performance in the 2026 Delhi University Students’ Union elections, after ABVP secured three of the four major posts.
ABVP candidates won the President, Secretary and Joint Secretary positions, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen secured the Vice President’s post.
The result triggered a series of reactions from BJP leaders, with several using the outcome to criticise the Congress and its student wing, the National Students’ Union of India. NSUI did not win any of the four central panel positions.
Kiren Rijiju Calls ABVP Result ‘Very Important’
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju congratulated ABVP after the results were announced and described the outcome as “very important and deeply symbolic”.
Rijiju also targeted the Congress over NSUI’s performance. He said the result showed that what he described as the Congress’s “Youth ki Goonj” narrative had not found support among DUSU voters.
He further described the DUSU election as an indication of the views of young voters. These comments were made by Rijiju while reacting to the election result and represent his political interpretation of the outcome.
Harsh Malhotra Congratulates ABVP Candidates
BJP Delhi president Harsh Malhotra also congratulated the ABVP candidates who won the three posts.
Malhotra described the result as a significant achievement for the student organisation and linked the outcome to what he called nationalist politics and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
His comments also criticised the Congress and NSUI following their failure to win a central panel position.
Virendra Sachdeva Targets Rahul Gandhi
BJP Delhi leader Virendra Sachdeva also reacted to the DUSU results, saying the outcome reflected his interpretation of what young voters think about the country’s political direction.
Sachdeva used the result to target Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and referred to the Congress campaign narrative while praising ABVP’s performance.
His comments were part of the BJP’s broader political response to the student election results.
ABVP Wins Three Major Posts
The election results saw Yash Dabas elected as DUSU President. He defeated NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena by 2,053 votes, according to election reports.
Riya Chhawdi won the Secretary position, while Lakshya Raj Singh secured the Joint Secretary post for ABVP.
The Vice President position went to independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member. Shokeen secured 30,615 votes, while ABVP’s Ishu Maurya finished second.
NSUI Draws a Blank
The Congress-backed NSUI failed to win any of the four central panel positions in this year’s DUSU election.
The result has therefore become a point of political debate, with BJP leaders presenting ABVP’s three-post victory as a significant development, while opposition voices have raised questions about the election process and counting.
The DUSU results, however, directly establish the outcome of the university election and the distribution of the four central posts; broader claims about what the result represents for youth opinion remain political interpretations rather than a formal measure of student views across India.
