Delhi witnessed intense rainfall early Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the national capital and neighbouring areas of the National Capital Region (NCR). The heavy downpour led to severe waterlogging at several locations, disrupting movement across parts of the city.
In an update issued at 6:45 am, the IMD warned that heavy rain was likely to continue over Delhi for the following two to three hours. Several prominent areas, including Parliament Street, Connaught Place, AIIMS, ITO, RK Puram and Ferozeshah Road, received heavy showers.
The weather conditions also affected air travel at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to airline tracking platform Flightradar24, 16 flights were cancelled while 123 others were delayed.
The IMD has indicated that the rain is likely to weaken from Wednesday. The weather agency has forecast partly cloudy conditions with no rainfall in Delhi between August 26 and August 30.
Temperatures are also expected to climb from Wednesday, with the maximum likely to remain between 35°C and 37°C, while minimum temperatures could range between 25°C and 28°C.
The latest forecast also indicates the possibility of rain from morning to noon, with another spell potentially occurring during the afternoon or evening. Winds may reach speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts touching 60 kmph in some areas.
