US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that fresh negotiations with Iran are set to begin on Monday through intermediary channels, expressing hope that diplomacy would prevail over military confrontation amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the United States remained open to reaching an agreement with Tehran, describing dialogue as the preferred path to prevent further escalation.
Trump Confirms Fresh Round Of Talks
Trump said discussions with Iran would commence on Monday afternoon through intermediaries and stressed that the objective was to find a peaceful resolution. “We are talking to them [the Iranians] in the form of a negotiation; it begins tomorrow afternoon, and we’ll see how it goes. I’d love to do that. It’ll save a lot of lives… Would I rather make a deal? I’m not looking to kill people, because a lot of people die; we don’t want that,” Trump said.
He added that the US was prepared to act if necessary but preferred a negotiated settlement over military action.
Military Strike Reportedly Put On Hold
The US President also revealed that diplomatic interventions by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran prompted Washington to suspend what he described as a planned “massive attack” against Tehran.
According to Trump, regional diplomatic efforts created an opportunity to resume negotiations instead of escalating the conflict.
Strait Of Hormuz And Nuclear Issue At Centre Of Discussions
Trump indicated that the upcoming talks would focus on two key issues—the future management of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.
He expressed confidence that an understanding could eventually be reached on keeping the strategically important shipping route operational while also addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.
Regional Diplomacy Intensifies
Reports indicate that regional mediators are working to revive a previously proposed framework aimed at ensuring uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media has also reported ongoing discussions between Tehran and Oman over a possible joint mechanism for managing maritime operations in the waterway, although no formal agreement has been officially confirmed.
Conflicting Claims Continue
Despite Trump’s optimism, uncertainty remains over the status of any potential agreement.
Iranian military officials have rejected Trump’s account of recent developments, while sources linked to Tehran have reportedly stated that no formal understanding regarding the Strait of Hormuz has yet been finalised.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Gulf nations remain divided on the US approach towards Iran, with some favouring continued diplomacy and others advocating a tougher response.
