A fresh diplomatic confrontation has emerged between Iran and the United States after US President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about Iran’s leadership during the funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran described the comments as inflammatory and accused Washington of disrespecting the sentiments of millions of mourners participating in the ceremonies.
The latest exchange has further heightened tensions between the two countries at a time when relations remain deeply strained.
Iran Rejects Trump’s Comments
Reacting through its embassy in Armenia, Iran issued a strong statement criticising Trump’s suggestion that the gathering of senior Iranian leaders at Khamenei’s funeral could have been targeted.
The embassy argued that the United States could not understand the scale of public mourning witnessed across Iran and defended Khamenei’s legacy, stating that while individuals may pass away, their beliefs continue to inspire future generations.
In its statement, the embassy said: “People can be killed, but ideals cannot. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality, you broke a perfume bottle whose scent spread everyplace.”
Iran also described the large turnout at the funeral as evidence of Khamenei’s enduring influence among supporters.
Trump Questions Public Mourning
The diplomatic response followed remarks made by Trump in an interview with Axios, where he questioned whether the public grief displayed during the funeral was genuine.
Trump suggested that the entire Iranian leadership was assembled at one location during the ceremonies and claimed the United States had the capability to eliminate them. “They are all there. One shot, and we can take them all out. But we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with,” Trump said.
He also questioned the authenticity of the public mourning, saying he believed many Iranians had opposed Khamenei.
Funeral Continues Across Multiple Cities
Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies have drawn thousands of mourners, senior government officials and foreign representatives from across the region.
The week-long procession is scheduled to pass through several significant cities before concluding with his burial in Mashhad. Throughout the ceremonies, large crowds have gathered to pay their respects, with participants chanting slogans, performing traditional Shiite mourning rituals and expressing solidarity with the late leader.
