India Faced Global Oil Supply Disruptions Without Fuel Shortages, Says Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said India successfully maintained uninterrupted fuel supplies despite recent global energy disruptions, crediting the country’s expanding refining capacity and effective planning for preventing shortages.

Addressing an event in Balotra, Puri said that global concerns had intensified after disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route through which a significant share of the world’s energy supplies passes. However, he asserted that India managed the situation without any major impact on domestic fuel availability.

Highlighting the government’s preparedness, the minister said, “In the last 3–4 months, when supply disruptions occurred globally due to the Strait of Hormuz being closed—through which 20–30% of global energy supplies pass, our supply system remained stable. Not a single one of our 1 lakh 7 thousand petrol pumps was shut, and there were no dry-outs anywhere because of the decisions taken and the refining capacity created.”

Puri said India’s robust refining infrastructure and strategic policy decisions ensured that fuel distribution continued smoothly across the country despite volatility in global energy markets. He added that the uninterrupted operation of more than 1.07 lakh petrol pumps reflected the resilience of India’s energy supply chain during a challenging period.
