Mumbai Monsoon Mayhem: Waterlogged Roads, Delayed Local Trains And IMD Red Alert Trigger Travel Disruptions

Mumbai witnessed another difficult morning on Thursday after relentless overnight rainfall left several parts of the city flooded, affecting road traffic and suburban railway operations. Continuous heavy showers through the night caused water to accumulate in low-lying areas, creating problems for office-goers during the morning rush.

Roads across both South Mumbai and the suburbs experienced waterlogging, forcing vehicles to move slowly and increasing travel time across major routes.

Several Areas Report Flooded Roads

Heavy rain affected many parts of the city, including Parel, Dadar, Sion, Byculla, Colaba and Marine Lines. In the suburbs, Andheri, Kurla, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Mulund also witnessed water accumulation, leading to traffic congestion during peak hours.

Neighbouring Virar in Palghar district also received intense rainfall as the monsoon remained active across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

IMD Sounds Red Alert For Mumbai Region

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast Red Alert on Thursday morning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. According to the weather department, isolated places may witness extremely heavy spells of rain over the next few hours.

Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain cautious near waterlogged areas and stay updated with official weather advisories as the possibility of flooding continues.

Local Train Services Affected During Peak Hours

The heavy rainfall also impacted Mumbai’s lifeline—its suburban railway network. Services on the Western, Central and Harbour lines were delayed by around 10 to 15 minutes due to rain-related operational issues and water accumulation near railway tracks.

The delays caused inconvenience to thousands of commuters travelling to offices and educational institutions during the busy morning period.

Heavy Monsoon Activity Likely To Continue

Mumbai and nearby districts have been experiencing continuous monsoon activity over the past several days. Weather officials have indicated that the current spell of heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next few days, keeping authorities on alert.

Civic agencies are closely monitoring flood-prone locations and have appealed to citizens to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary.

More Than 200 mm Rain Recorded At Several Locations

Data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed exceptionally heavy rainfall at multiple locations during the last 24 hours.

Paspoli in Powai recorded the highest rainfall at 236 mm, followed by SWM Santacruz Workshop (235 mm) and Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli (234 mm).

Other locations also reported significant rainfall, including Mithanagar in Mulund (225 mm), Mankhurd Fire Station (223 mm), Copper Hospital in Andheri (222 mm), F-South Ward Office in Parel (212 mm) and Aarey Colony in Goregaon (210 mm).

Authorities Urge Residents To Stay Alert

With heavy rainfall expected to continue, authorities have advised residents to avoid waterlogged roads, drive cautiously and follow weather updates before stepping out. Emergency teams remain on standby as civic officials continue monitoring vulnerable locations across Mumbai to minimise disruption and ensure public safety.
