Bengaluru Metro Breakdown Triggers Massive Traffic Chaos, Purple Line Services Resume After Technical Fix

Technical Fault Brings Peak-Hour Travel to a Halt

Bengaluru witnessed severe traffic congestion and overcrowded metro stations after a technical issue interrupted services on the Purple Line during Tuesday evening’s rush hour. The disruption forced thousands of office-goers and daily commuters to look for alternative transport, putting additional pressure on the city’s already busy roads.

Several videos shared on social media showed long queues at major stations, including Cubbon Park and MG Road, as passengers waited for updates or searched for other travel options.

Roads Packed as Commuters Turn to Cabs and Autos

With metro operations affected, many commuters rushed to book app-based taxis and autorickshaws. The sudden surge in demand led to longer waiting times and intensified traffic across key parts of Bengaluru.

Many passengers expressed frustration over being stranded during one of the busiest travel periods of the day, with complaints flooding social media platforms.

Political Row Erupts Over Metro Failure

The disruption also triggered a political exchange, with BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticising the Karnataka government over the city’s infrastructure challenges.

Posting on X, Surya said Bengaluru possesses “first-world tech talent, but third-world governance,” adding that metro failures have become increasingly common and create citywide chaos whenever they occur.

He also claimed commuters were forced to find unconventional ways to reach home, including hitching rides on trucks and lorries, while questioning the reliability of the public transport system.

BMRCL Restores Operations

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that the technical issue at Cubbon Park Metro Station had been resolved and that normal services resumed from 5:00 AM on June 24, 2026.

In its update, BMRCL said: “Direct Route Metro Service Resumes. The technical fault that occurred at Kabbang Park Metro Station has been successfully resolved. Today, on 24.06.2026, from 5:00 AM onwards, metro rail operations on the direct route will resume as per the regular schedule.”

The corporation also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and assured commuters that services are once again operating safely and efficiently.

Commuters Hope for More Reliable Services

While metro operations have returned to normal, the disruption has once again highlighted Bengaluru’s dependence on its rapid transit network. Many residents are calling for stronger maintenance measures and quicker response systems to prevent similar incidents from bringing the city’s transport network to a standstill.
