UP government launches high-level probe
The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a detailed investigation into the Lucknow fire tragedy that killed at least 15 people and injured several others in the Aliganj area.
Following a high-level review, a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to examine the cause of the fire and possible administrative lapses. The team has been directed to submit its report within seven days.
Four arrested, building owners under custody
Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident, including those linked to the ownership and management of the building. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
Officials suspended over negligence
The state government has also suspended four officials from departments including the electricity department, fire services, and the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), citing alleged lapses in compliance and monitoring.
Forensic team collects evidence
A six-member forensic team visited the site to gather samples and examine the structural and electrical conditions that may have contributed to the blaze. The SIT is also expected to conduct a detailed on-site inspection.
Relief announced for victims
The government has announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Old demolition order under scrutiny
Investigators are also reviewing past records related to the building. Documents suggest that an illegal construction case was registered in 2016 and a demolition order was issued by the Lucknow Development Authority.
However, the order was reportedly revoked within two months, raising questions about administrative decisions and possible lapses that may have allowed the structure to remain in use.
Probe continues
Authorities say the SIT will now focus on both the cause of the fire and possible regulatory failures that may have contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
