Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the G7 Summit platform to draw global attention to the deaths of Indian nationals caught in a recent maritime conflict in West Asia, stressing that the safety of seafarers must become an international priority.
Speaking during discussions on global cooperation and economic stability, Modi highlighted how escalating tensions in the region have affected both human lives and international trade. With world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, present at the summit, the Prime Minister emphasized that instability around critical shipping corridors is creating serious challenges for the global economy.
Modi noted that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has resulted in casualties and damage across several countries, while disruptions to major sea routes have impacted international commerce. He said India remains concerned about the loss of civilian lives, including Indian citizens working in the maritime sector.
Calling seafarers the backbone of global trade, Modi urged nations to work together to ensure that shipping routes remain safe and uninterrupted. He said those who keep international trade moving across oceans deserve protection and security while performing their duties.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime passages through which a significant share of global oil and cargo shipments travel.
His comments also followed a recent incident involving a commercial vessel operating in the Gulf region, where Indian crew members were among those affected during military action linked to regional tensions.
With uncertainty continuing in West Asia, Modi called for stronger international cooperation to safeguard maritime trade, protect civilian sailors, and prevent further loss of life in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping zones.
