Under-construction bridge collapses in Hamirpur during storm
A major tragedy unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district after an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed during severe weather conditions, leaving multiple workers dead and several others feared trapped beneath the debris.
The incident reportedly occurred during the night amid heavy rainfall and strong winds when a section of the bridge structure suddenly gave way. According to officials, a number of labourers were resting on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
Rescue teams launch emergency operation
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and district administration rushed to the site soon after information about the collapse was received. Rescue personnel immediately began operations to locate trapped workers and remove debris from the accident zone.
Senior police officials stated that several bodies had already been recovered while search efforts were continuing amid difficult conditions. Authorities fear the casualty count could increase as operations progress.
Yogi Adityanath expresses grief over tragedy
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the incident and directed officials to intensify rescue and relief work at the site.
In a statement, the Chief Minister extended condolences to the families of the deceased and instructed authorities to ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured. He also ordered officials to provide compensation and all possible assistance to affected families.
Senior officials directed to monitor situation
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, senior administrative officials were instructed to immediately reach the accident site and supervise the ongoing rescue operation. Emergency medical teams were also placed on alert to handle injured workers brought from the collapse site.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rescue operations continue through the debris of the damaged bridge structure.
Safety concerns raised after collapse
The bridge collapse has triggered fresh concerns regarding construction safety measures and working conditions at infrastructure project sites during extreme weather events. Questions are also being raised over whether adequate precautions were in place for labourers working and resting at the construction zone during the storm.
Officials are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the cause of the collapse once rescue operations are completed.
