Chandigarh: The night began with tension, noise and playoff pressure. It ended with disbelief, fireworks and the arrival of a new IPL sensation.
In a tournament long dominated by superstars such as Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Andre Russell, a 15-year-old schoolboy walked into the spotlight in New Chandigarh and produced an innings that felt almost unreal.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi ripped apart Sunrisers Hyderabad with astonishing composure and fearless strokeplay, smashing a breathtaking 97 off just 29 balls to power Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2 of IPL 2026.
It was not merely an explosive innings. It felt like the arrival of a player capable of reshaping the future of the league itself.
Hyderabad’s bowlers were attacked relentlessly from the very beginning. Pace, spin, yorkers and slower balls — nothing seemed capable of slowing the teenager down. Every boundary pushed the stadium deeper into disbelief as Rajasthan’s chase turned into a one-sided demolition.

Vaibhav eventually fell agonisingly short of a century, but by then Sunrisers Hyderabad’s hopes had already disappeared into the New Chandigarh night sky.
Rajasthan Royals defeated SRH by 47 runs to continue their unbeaten run at the venue and book a Qualifier 2 clash against Gujarat Titans on May 29. Hyderabad, meanwhile, crashed out of IPL 2026 despite one of the tournament’s strongest batting campaigns.
Vaibhav Rewrites The Script
IPL history has witnessed countless destructive innings from some of the game’s greatest power-hitters. Yet on one of the biggest nights of the season, a teenager entered that elite conversation.
Vaibhav’s 29-ball 97 was among the most explosive knocks ever seen in an IPL playoff game. The young opener dismantled both pace and spin with remarkable maturity, clearing boundaries at will while manipulating the field like a far more experienced batter.
What stood out most was not just the power, but the complete absence of fear.
Whether facing experienced international bowlers or high-pressure playoff moments, Vaibhav looked entirely unfazed. His fearless approach instantly shifted the momentum of the match and left Hyderabad searching desperately for answers that never arrived.
Rajasthan’s Batting Turns Ruthless

Although Vaibhav dominated the headlines, Rajasthan’s batting performance was collectively brutal.
Yashasvi Jaiswal once again provided an attacking start, while Dhruv Jurel maintained the scoring tempo with a powerful middle-order contribution. Captain Riyan Parag capitalised brilliantly in the death overs as Rajasthan continued their assault on Hyderabad’s bowling attack.
RR eventually posted 243/8 — a massive total that somehow still felt slightly below what appeared possible during the carnage at the top.
Had Rajasthan’s lower order finished more efficiently, the total could easily have crossed 250.
Archer Strikes Early

If Vaibhav destroyed SRH with the bat, Jofra Archer dismantled them with raw pace.
Archer ripped through Hyderabad’s top order with a hostile opening spell, removing Abhishek Sharma early and consistently bowling at intimidating pace during the powerplay. From that point onward, Hyderabad never truly recovered.
The pressure continued to build as Rajasthan’s bowlers struck regularly throughout the chase.
One of the defining moments came when young pacer Yash Punjia dismissed Heinrich Klaasen, effectively ending any realistic hopes of a Hyderabad comeback.
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja added further control with disciplined bowling, sharp fielding and trademark intensity, while Nandre Burger provided aggressive support with crucial breakthroughs.
SRH Collapse Under Knockout Pressure
Sunrisers Hyderabad never managed to establish control during the chase.
The early dismissal of Abhishek Sharma immediately placed SRH under pressure, and although Ishan Kishan attempted to counterattack with several aggressive strokes, Hyderabad never seriously threatened Rajasthan’s total.
Kishan showed intent but failed to convert his start into a match-changing innings. Once Klaasen departed, the contest effectively slipped away completely.
The same batting line-up that terrorised bowling attacks throughout the season suddenly appeared uncertain and fragile under knockout pressure.
Rajasthan’s New Chandigarh Fortress
Rajasthan Royals continued their dominance in New Chandigarh, extending their unbeaten record at the venue to 4-0 this season.
Now comes an even bigger challenge.
RR will next face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 at the same ground, with a place in the IPL 2026 final at stake.
After the arrival of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Rajasthan suddenly look like a team capable of anything.
