Trump Announces Death Of Senior ISIS Commander In Joint US-Nigerian Operation

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki Killed During High-Level Counterterror Mission In Africa

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that senior ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was killed during a coordinated counterterrorism operation conducted jointly by American and Nigerian forces in Africa.

Trump described al-Minuki as one of the most influential ISIS figures operating outside the Middle East and claimed the mission targeted a key architect behind the terror group’s growing footprint across West Africa and the Sahel region.

Posting about the operation after it concluded, Trump said the raid involved months of intelligence coordination and military planning aimed at dismantling a major extremist network operating across unstable regions of Africa.

“He will no longer terrorise the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans,” Trump stated while confirming the operation.

ISIS Figure Linked To Expansion Across West Africa

According to security assessments, al-Minuki emerged as a powerful figure within extremist circles linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction that split from Boko Haram and later aligned itself with ISIS.

Born in Nigeria’s Borno State, the militant reportedly built strong influence across insurgency-hit areas surrounding the Lake Chad Basin and parts of the Sahel, regions that have witnessed growing extremist violence in recent years.

Counterterror officials said he played a major role in strengthening operational coordination between ISIS-linked groups across multiple African nations.

Key Role In ISIS International Operations

Intelligence reports had previously linked al-Minuki to ISIS’s international command structure responsible for managing regional branches outside Iraq and Syria.

Analysts believe he was involved in handling logistics, militant financing and operational planning connected to extremist activities in Africa.

Security agencies also identified him as a senior figure associated with ISIS networks responsible for maintaining communication and support channels between different militant factions operating across the continent.

Experts viewed him as a central figure in ISIS’s attempts to expand influence in fragile regions affected by conflict, poverty and weak governance.

US Had Declared Him Global Terrorist

The United States had formally designated al-Minuki as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2023 under counterterrorism sanctions targeting individuals involved in extremist financing and international terror activities.

American authorities accused him of helping ISIS strengthen its African operations while supporting recruitment and militant coordination across the Sahel belt.

Officials also alleged that he maintained links with several armed extremist groups active in remote areas of West and Central Africa.

Questions Remain Over Earlier Death Reports

Reports from Nigerian military circles in 2024 had earlier suggested that al-Minuki may have been killed during security operations in the region.

However, the latest announcement from Trump indicates that US and Nigerian intelligence agencies later confirmed his identity and involvement through a separate joint mission carried out in 2026.

Officials are expected to release more details regarding the operation, including the location of the raid and its broader implications for ISIS-linked networks in Africa.

Growing Focus On ISIS Presence In Africa

Security experts have increasingly warned about ISIS shifting attention toward Africa as pressure mounted on the organisation’s traditional bases in the Middle East.

The Sahel region in particular has become a hotspot for extremist violence, with ISIS-linked and al-Qaeda-linked groups expanding activities across several countries facing political instability and insurgencies.

Counterterror analysts say the elimination of figures like al-Minuki could temporarily disrupt militant coordination efforts, though concerns remain about the continued spread of extremist organisations across vulnerable regions.
