Vote counting for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections is underway, and early trends point to a significant advantage for the Bharatiya Janata Party. As per the latest updates from the Election Commission, the party is leading in close to 200 constituencies, placing it well beyond the majority mark in the 294-seat Assembly.
In contrast, the All India Trinamool Congress is trailing with leads in under 100 seats, indicating a sharp shift from its dominant position in the previous election. The early numbers suggest a major change in the state’s political landscape, though final outcomes will depend on the completion of all counting rounds.
Amid the high-stakes counting process, tensions have been reported from multiple locations. In Asansol, a clash broke out near a counting centre, prompting security forces to intervene. Officials resorted to a lathi charge to disperse crowds after the situation escalated, with reports of damage to property, including chairs and vehicles, during the unrest.
A similar tense situation unfolded in Dinhata, where workers from rival political parties engaged in a heated confrontation. Police personnel quickly moved in to control the crowd and prevent further escalation, ensuring that the counting process continued without disruption.
