The Mumbai Indians may not have lifted the IPL trophy in recent years, but head coach Mahela Jayawardene is not losing sleep over it.
Ahead of their high-voltage clash against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, Jayawardene made it clear that the team remains focused on its long-term approach rather than past disappointments.
“We Trust the Process,” Says Jayawardene
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jayawardene emphasised that consistency has been Mumbai’s strength over the years.
He pointed out that despite not winning the title since 2020, the team has still managed to reach the playoffs multiple times, showing that they remain competitive.
“In a tournament like this, you have to take one game at a time and trust the process. We’ve been consistent over a long period,” he said.
MI’s Legacy vs Recent Struggles
Led by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians have been one of the most successful teams in IPL history, winning five titles in the last decade.
However, in the past five years, the team has struggled to convert opportunities into championships, despite making playoff appearances.
Jayawardene also made a subtle remark, noting that several teams in the league are still chasing their first title, suggesting MI’s record remains strong in comparison.
Strong Start to IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians have begun their IPL 2026 campaign on a positive note, securing a convincing six-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Rohit Sharma led from the front with a brilliant knock of 78 runs off just 38 balls. Opener Ryan Rickelton also impressed with a solid 81-run innings, setting up the chase.
All-rounder Shardul Thakur played a crucial role with the ball, picking up three wickets and earning the Player of the Match award.
Focus on Consistency, Not Pressure
Jayawardene stressed that the team is avoiding unnecessary pressure about the title drought and is instead concentrating on improving with each game.
He believes that maintaining the right attitude and pushing the limits in every match will eventually bring results.
