Amid rising concerns over the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Centre on Monday moved to calm fears, assuring citizens that fuel, fertiliser, and essential commodities are available in sufficient quantities across India.
Officials emphasised that supply chains remain stable despite global uncertainties, and proactive steps are being taken to prevent disruptions.
Fuel Supply Stable, Prices Controlled
At an inter-ministerial briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that petrol, diesel, LPG, and PNG are adequately available.
She said refineries are functioning normally, even as isolated instances of panic buying were reported.
To keep prices in check, the government has:
- Reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10
- Imposed export levy on diesel and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)
- Ensured sufficient LPG stock across the country
Additional kerosene allocations have also been made to states, including those earlier declared kerosene-free.
Fertiliser Supply Hit but Stocks Strong
On the fertiliser front, Aparna S Sharma from the Department of Fertilisers acknowledged challenges due to global supply disruptions.
Domestic urea production initially dropped by 30,000–35,000 tonnes per day due to reduced gas supply but has now recovered to nearly 80%.
Despite this, the government said fertiliser stocks remain “very healthy”:
- Current reserves: 180 lakh metric tonnes
- Last year: 147 lakh metric tonnes
Farmers continue to receive subsidised fertilisers:
- Urea at ₹266 per bag
- DAP at ₹1,350 per bag
India Expands Import Sources
To reduce dependency on Gulf nations, India is diversifying fertiliser imports.
New supply partnerships are being explored with countries like Russia, Morocco, Canada, and Egypt to ensure long-term stability.
Focus on Indians in West Asia
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in the region.
Additional Secretary Aseem Mahajan stated that Indian missions are actively supporting seafarers and facilitating repatriation where needed.
Flight operations are gradually improving:
- Around 85 flights expected from the UAE
- Limited flights from Saudi Arabia and Oman
- Partial reopening of Qatari airspace
Alternative evacuation routes via Armenia, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia are also being used.
PM Modi Engages Global Leaders
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been in touch with global leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Modi has condemned attacks on energy infrastructure and stressed the importance of secure maritime routes.
