Baltej Singh Named in New Zealand Drug Bust, Sentenced in Biggest Meth Case

An Indian-origin man has come into global spotlight after being publicly identified in New Zealand’s largest-ever drug bust, ending months of secrecy around the high-profile case.

Who Is Baltej Singh and Why Is He in the News?

Baltej Singh, a 32-year-old based in Auckland, was earlier known as a small businessman in south Auckland. His family had migrated decades ago and was associated with a grocery business.

However, investigators later identified him as the alleged mastermind of a massive international drug network, shocking both local communities and authorities.

What Was Found in New Zealand’s Biggest Drug Seizure?

The case exploded in 2023 when New Zealand Police raided a warehouse in Manukau and seized around 328 kg of methamphetamine.

Further investigation revealed total linked imports exceeding 700 kg, making it the biggest drug seizure in the country’s history. The drugs were cleverly hidden inside beer cans labelled “Honey Bear” and other imported beverage shipments from Canada.

Authorities said the operation involved not just meth but also substances like ephedrine and cocaine, pointing to a highly organised international network.

How Was Singh Arrested While Trying to Escape?

Singh was arrested at Auckland Airport while attempting to flee to Dubai. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying over $10,000 in cash, raising further suspicion about his involvement in the syndicate.

How Did the Case Turn Into a Manslaughter Conviction?

The case took a serious turn after a 21-year-old, Aiden Sagala, died after consuming methamphetamine from contaminated cans linked to the operation.

This led to Singh being convicted of manslaughter, a rare escalation in drug trafficking cases where distribution directly resulted in a death.

What Sentence Did the Court Give?

In February 2025, the Auckland High Court sentenced Singh to 22 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including large-scale drug importation and manslaughter.

The drug network was estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars, with some reports valuing it at around ₹180 crore.

Why Was His Name Hidden Earlier?

After his arrest, Singh had secured interim name suppression, citing safety concerns linked to his background. However, in March 2026, he withdrew his request, and courts allowed his identity to be made public, citing strong public interest.
