Sonia Gandhi Hospital Row: Nishikant Dubey Questions AIIMS Choice, Congress Responds

A fresh political controversy has erupted after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey questioned why senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to a private hospital instead of a government facility, triggering a sharp backlash from the opposition.

Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, is currently admitted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after experiencing respiratory issues. Hospital officials have confirmed that she is stable, under observation, and receiving treatment including antibiotics.

What Did Nishikant Dubey Say?

The controversy began when Nishikant Dubey took to social media platform X and raised questions about the choice of hospital. He asked why Sonia Gandhi was not admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one of India’s top government hospitals.

In his remarks, Dubey referred to reservation policies in government institutions and questioned whether the Congress leadership lacked faith in public healthcare.

He wrote that treatment at a private hospital avoids reservation policies, while treatment at AIIMS would involve doctors selected under reservation, and asked whether there was a lack of trust in government hospitals.

He also made political remarks targeting the Congress leadership, further intensifying the controversy.

Why Has This Sparked a Political Storm?

Dubey’s comments quickly drew criticism for linking a personal medical situation with political and social issues like reservation. Opposition leaders accused him of making insensitive statements during a time when Sonia Gandhi is undergoing treatment.

The issue escalated into a broader political debate on healthcare, reservation, and the use of personal matters for political attacks.

How Did Congress Respond?

Congress leaders strongly condemned the remarks. Party MP Manickam Tagore called Dubey’s statements “disgusting” and “insensitive.”

Tagore said that reservation is about social justice and representation, not about questioning merit. He emphasised that doctors in premier institutions are known for their expertise and dedication, regardless of caste or background.

He also accused the BJP leader of attempting to divide society through such statements and using a sensitive health issue for political gain.

What Is Sonia Gandhi’s Health Status?

According to hospital authorities, Sonia Gandhi remains stable and under close medical supervision. Doctors are continuing investigations and treatment as a precautionary measure.

Her hospitalisation has already drawn national attention, and this political controversy has added another layer to the situation.
