Free Train Travel for Gallantry Award Winners: Govt Announces Lifetime Indian Railways Benefit

In a landmark move recognising the bravery and sacrifice of India’s armed forces, the central government has approved lifetime free train travel for gallantry award winners from the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The decision, confirmed by defence officials, is being seen as a major welfare step to support the country’s most decorated soldiers and their families.

Who Will Get This Benefit?

Under the new rules notified by the Centre, the free travel facility will apply to multiple categories connected to gallantry awardees.

All armed forces personnel who have received gallantry awards will be eligible for this lifetime benefit. In addition, their spouses will also be entitled to free travel, including widows or widowers of deceased awardees, provided they have not remarried.

In cases where the award was given posthumously to an unmarried soldier, the parents of the awardee will receive this benefit.

Officials said the aim is to ensure that families of brave soldiers continue to receive recognition and support even after their service or sacrifice.

What Travel Facilities Are Included?

The free travel scheme will be available on Indian Railways and will include a companion for the beneficiary.

Eligible travel classes include:

  • First Class
  • Second AC
  • AC Chair Car

Railway authorities stated that the focus is on providing comfortable and dignified travel to the nation’s heroes.

When Will the Scheme Start?

The Ministry of Defence has announced that the scheme is effective immediately, and thousands of military families are expected to benefit from this initiative across the country.

Officials highlighted that this move reflects the nation’s gratitude towards those who have displayed exceptional courage in protecting India.

What Are Gallantry Awards in India?

Gallantry awards are among the highest honours given by the country to recognise acts of bravery and sacrifice by armed forces personnel.

These include prestigious awards such as the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.

These medals honour soldiers for extraordinary courage during war, counter-insurgency operations, and even peacetime missions.

A Strong Message of Respect

This decision sends a powerful message about the country’s commitment to honouring its soldiers. By extending lifetime benefits not just to awardees but also to their families, the government has reinforced the idea that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
