Raj Thackeray Launches ‘Maharashtra Next’, Slams State Government

Raj Thackeray, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, on Thursday announced a major new initiative titled ‘Maharashtra Next’ while launching a sharp attack on the state government during his Gudi Padwa rally at Shivaji Park. The event also marked 20 years of the party’s foundation.

What Is ‘Maharashtra Next’?

Thackeray said ‘Maharashtra Next’ will be a public-driven development blueprint, inviting citizens to contribute ideas for the state’s future. He emphasised that the initiative aims to go beyond traditional development models and focus on inclusive and participatory planning.

According to him, the plan will address key areas such as infrastructure, employment, cultural identity, and balanced regional growth—issues he believes are being ignored under the current system.

Attack on Government’s Development Model

Criticising the government, Thackeray said development in Maharashtra has been reduced to roads, flyovers and big announcements without a long-term vision. He questioned the state’s rising debt, claiming it has reached nearly ₹11 lakh crore, compared to around ₹2 lakh crore during the tenure of former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Law and Order Concerns Raised

Raising serious concerns, Thackeray alleged that drug abuse has spread across Maharashtra, even in schools and colleges. Referring to data presented by Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he said the government itself had acknowledged the issue but failed to take strong action.

Missing Children Issue Sparks Alarm

He also highlighted the issue of missing children, claiming thousands go missing every year across the state. Referring to incidents in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, he described the situation as deeply concerning and demanded urgent attention.

“Contractors Running the System?”

Alleging a governance breakdown, Thackeray said contractors and financial interests are increasingly controlling the system. He claimed that with no elections for the next three years, there is unchecked freedom for corruption through contracts.

Rural Neglect and Urban Crisis

The MNS chief criticised the lack of rural development, saying it is forcing migration to cities that are already overcrowded. Highlighting urban issues, he pointed out that while services have become faster, daily commuting remains a major struggle for citizens.

Cultural Identity Warning

Thackeray warned that Maharashtra risks losing its linguistic and regional identity if immediate corrective steps are not taken. He stressed the need to protect the state’s cultural roots amid rapid urbanisation and demographic changes.

A New Political Narrative?

Positioning ‘Maharashtra Next’ as an alternative vision, Thackeray said the initiative will rely on public participation to shape long-term solutions. With this move, he appears to be setting the stage for a broader political narrative focused on governance, identity and development ahead of future elections.
