A major political development unfolded in West Bengal on Tuesday as Gyanesh Kumar addressed a press conference during his visit to the state. Amid rising political tensions and allegations over voter list revisions, the Chief Election Commissioner assured citizens that no eligible voter’s name will be removed from the electoral rolls.

The Election Commission’s primary objective, he said, is to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections in West Bengal, a state known for intense political competition.

Kumar made these remarks after holding a series of meetings with political parties, election officials, and administrative authorities during his tour of the state.

Will Any Voter Be Removed From Bengal’s Electoral Rolls?

Addressing the biggest concern surrounding the election process, Kumar firmly stated that every eligible voter will remain on the voter list and will get a chance to vote.

He emphasised that the electoral roll revision process is being conducted strictly according to constitutional provisions.

“Our aim is to ensure free and fair elections and peaceful polls in Bengal,” Kumar said during the briefing.

The CEC also highlighted that government employees involved in the election process must strictly follow Election Commission instructions, warning that any negligence or laxity will not be tolerated.

Why Is Bengal’s Election Process So Massive?

The Election Commission also revealed the enormous scale of the electoral exercise in the state.

According to Kumar, West Bengal has nearly 80,000 polling stations, making it one of the largest election management exercises in the country.

Out of these:

  • Around 61,000 polling booths are located in rural areas
  • The rest are spread across urban centres like Kolkata and other districts

This large rural presence makes election management particularly challenging, requiring significant manpower and security arrangements.

What Is the Big Technology Step Announced by the Election Commission?

In a major move aimed at transparency, the Election Commission announced that 100 percent webcasting will be implemented at polling booths across the state.

This means that every polling station will be digitally monitored, allowing authorities to watch the voting process in real time.

The move is expected to:

  • Increase transparency
  • Prevent irregularities
  • Build public trust in the electoral process

Why Did Gyanesh Kumar Face Protests in Kolkata?

Despite the assurances, Kumar’s visit was not without controversy.

On Tuesday morning, a group of protesters gathered outside the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple where they showed black flags and raised “Go Back” slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner.

The protests were linked to allegations that voters were being arbitrarily removed from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Similar demonstrations also took place earlier at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport when Kumar arrived in the city on Sunday night.

Another protest occurred on Monday when he visited the historic Kalighat Temple.

Despite the demonstrations, Kumar continued his scheduled visits, including a trip to Belur Math.

What Did the Supreme Court Say About the Voter List Issue?

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India also weighed in on the issue related to the Special Intensive Revision process.

The court directed the state government and the Election Commission to ensure smooth working conditions for judicial officers handling voter objections and claims.

According to the court, judicial officers have already processed around 10.16 lakh objections and claims from people whose names were left out during the SIR process.

Can Bengal Expect Violence-Free Elections?

Reassuring voters once again, Kumar said the Election Commission is committed to ensuring violence-free elections in West Bengal.

He said the poll panel will make every effort to ensure that citizens can vote in a festive and peaceful atmosphere, reinforcing public faith in the democratic process.

The coming months are expected to remain politically charged as preparations intensify for the next electoral battle in the state.
