Washington: United States President Donald Trump has announced a sharp escalation in Washington’s economic stance toward Iran, declaring that any country continuing trade relations with Tehran will face an additional 25 percent tariff on its trade with the United States. The move signals a tougher policy approach and is expected to send shockwaves through global markets.
In a public message, President Trump stated that the new tariff measure would take effect immediately and apply broadly to countries engaged in business with Iran. While the announcement did not provide details on specific sectors or enforcement mechanisms, the warning itself has raised serious concerns among nations with ongoing commercial ties to Tehran.
For India, the development could be particularly damaging. Trade experts warn that when combined with existing duties, Indian exports to the US could face tariffs rising as high as 75 percent, potentially impacting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, textiles, and IT-linked services. Industry leaders fear that such a move could make Indian products significantly less competitive in the American market.
The White House later clarified that the administration is simultaneously pursuing diplomatic channels with Iran, even as it keeps stronger options available. Officials said the President’s immediate focus is on preventing further instability and violence within Iran, where protests and unrest have intensified in recent weeks.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said the US administration is receiving mixed signals from Tehran. According to her, Iran’s private communications differ sharply from its public statements, prompting Washington to closely assess the possibility of dialogue.
Leavitt also emphasized that while diplomacy remains the preferred path, the President is prepared to escalate pressure if required. She noted that Trump has a history of decisive action and is willing to use all tools available to protect US interests and regional stability.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, she added, continues to play a key role in managing diplomatic outreach related to Iran. His efforts are part of a broader strategy aimed at testing the seriousness of Tehran’s private messages while maintaining pressure through economic and strategic means.
