Delhi: Communal tensions have escalated sharply in several regions of southern Nepal near the Indian border, prompting heightened security measures, curfews, and a complete sealing of cross-border movement by Indian authorities. The unrest has raised serious concerns over law and order in border districts closely connected to India through trade and migration.

The flashpoint of the violence was Birgunj, a key commercial town in Nepal’s Parsa district bordering Bihar’s Raxaul. Protests reportedly broke out after a controversial video with alleged religious references began circulating widely on social media platforms. What started as demonstrations quickly spiraled into clashes, forcing the district administration to step in.

The Parsa District Administration Office imposed a curfew in Birgunj from 6 pm on Monday night to 8 am the following morning. However, as tensions failed to subside, authorities extended the curfew until 1 pm on Tuesday, citing continued threats to public safety.

The situation further deteriorated after incidents of vandalism were reported in other districts. In Dhanusha district’s Kamala Municipality, a mosque was allegedly attacked by unidentified individuals. Shortly after, videos of the incident spread rapidly online, intensifying communal sentiments. Nepal Police later confirmed that two youths were detained for allegedly circulating provocative content on social media platforms following the incident.

Security forces faced violent resistance during attempts to restore order in Birgunj. Protesters reportedly pelted stones at police personnel and damaged a local police station. To disperse the crowd and regain control, police fired multiple tear gas shells, officials said.

Amid fears of the unrest spreading further, Indian authorities have sealed the Indo-Nepal border in the affected sector, allowing only emergency services to operate. The closure has disrupted daily movement and trade, triggering uncertainty among residents on both sides.
