Mumbai: A Mumbai court has directed the Bhandup Police to investigate a defamation complaint filed by a VHP worker against senior Congress leaders from Karnataka, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.
The complaint centers on the Karnataka Congress’s 2023 Assembly election manifesto, released on May 2, 2023, which allegedly drew parallels between the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Popular Front of India (PFI). The petitioner claims that the comparison was defamatory and hurt the sentiments of VHP members.
The court has instructed the police to complete the preliminary inquiry into the matter by February 17, 2026. Legal experts suggest that the investigation could become politically sensitive, given the stature of the accused and the public nature of the manifesto.
