Washington: Relations between Washington and Caracas have plunged into their deepest crisis yet after the United States carried out heavy military action in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, triggering global alarm and fierce diplomatic fallout. US President Donald Trump has publicly defended the operation, alleging that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured during the strikes and is now facing prosecution in the United States.

Speaking at a press interaction in Florida, Trump accused the Maduro government of protecting international drug cartels and fuelling regional instability. He asserted that the US action was aimed at dismantling what he described as a “narco-terror structure” operating from the highest levels of the Venezuelan state.

According to Trump’s claims, Maduro was transferred to the custody of American authorities and taken to New York, where he is expected to face criminal proceedings. The US president also suggested that Washington would temporarily oversee Venezuela’s administration until a new leadership emerges, arguing that such intervention was necessary to ensure stability and protect Venezuelan citizens.

US officials have long alleged that Caracas has sheltered drug trafficking networks and armed groups operating across Latin America, contributing to mass migration and economic collapse. Vice President JD Vance stated that diplomatic channels had been exhausted, claiming repeated US outreach was ignored by Maduro’s government.

The strikes, however, have sparked intense legal and diplomatic controversy. Reports indicate that the US Congress was not formally briefed ahead of the military action, raising constitutional questions at home. International law experts have warned that direct military action against a sovereign state could amount to an armed conflict under international law.

The United Nations has expressed serious concern, cautioning that such actions risk destabilising the wider region. In a statement, the UN urged restraint and dialogue, warning that unilateral military interventions undermine the principles of sovereignty and the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities have condemned the strikes as an act of aggression and vowed resistance, even as the full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear.
