Delhi: The Congress has started laying the groundwork for the 2026 Assembly elections by reshaping its internal election machinery across several states. In a significant organisational move, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the Chairperson of the party’s screening committee for Assam, entrusting her with the responsibility of finalising candidates for the crucial northeastern contest.
This marks Priyanka Gandhi’s first major organisational assignment after stepping down from her role as the AICC general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh. Party sources say her appointment signals the Congress leadership’s intent to strengthen its strategy in Assam, where the party is preparing for a direct fight against the BJP-led NDA, which is eyeing a third consecutive term.
Alongside Assam, the Congress has also announced screening committee heads for other states heading into elections in 2026. Former Rajya Sabha MP Madhusudan Mistry will oversee the candidate selection process in Kerala, while former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister T.S. Singh Deo has been given charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Senior leader B.K. Hariprasad will head the screening committee in West Bengal.
The Assam Assembly elections will be held to fill all 126 seats, with the current House’s term ending in May 2026. Polls are expected to be conducted in multiple phases around March–April 2026, following the pattern of previous elections. Assam is considered a politically sensitive state in the Northeast, making the contest vital for both national and regional parties.
In West Bengal, where elections are also due in 2026, the battle is expected to once again pit the ruling Trinamool Congress against an aggressive BJP challenge. Meanwhile, in southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Congress is aiming to recalibrate its candidate selection to improve its electoral performance.
