New York: Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as the 112th mayor of New York City, making history as the city’s first Muslim and South Asian leader to hold the post. The Indian-origin politician, a democratic socialist, highlighted the importance of compassion and inclusivity in his inaugural address, recalling a life-changing conversation with a Pakistani woman named Samina.

“I spoke to a Pakistani aunty named Samina, who told me this movement had fostered something too rare: softness in people’s hearts,” Mamdani said. Quoting her in Urdu, he added, “Logon ke dil badal gaye hain (people’s hearts have changed).” His words resonated with thousands of supporters who gathered in Lower Manhattan to witness the historic oath-taking ceremony.

Mamdani also expressed gratitude to his family, acknowledging the role they played in his journey. “Thank you to my parents, Mama and Baba, for raising me, for teaching me how to be in this world, and for having brought me to this city. Thank you to my family, from Kampala to Delhi. And thank you to my wife, Rama, for being my best friend, and for always showing me the beauty in everyday things,” he said.

The celebratory crowd wore pins, hats, and T-shirts bearing Mamdani’s name and image, reflecting the enthusiasm and support for the new mayor. Analysts say Mamdani’s rise is emblematic of New York City’s diverse and evolving political landscape, signaling a shift toward more inclusive and representative governance.
