Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called upon Members of Parliament to take an active role in identifying and nurturing young sporting talent, as India prepares to host major international sports events in the coming years. Addressing the “Sansad Khel Mahotsav” through a virtual interaction, the Prime Minister laid out a long-term vision for India’s sporting future.
PM Modi said India is entering a decisive phase where sports infrastructure, global exposure, and grassroots talent development must move forward together. He highlighted that India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030, describing it as a historic opportunity for young athletes to compete on home ground and gain international experience.
Looking further ahead, the Prime Minister spoke about India’s ambition to host the Olympic Games in 2036. He noted that children who are in their early teens today could emerge as India’s Olympic representatives over the next decade. According to him, the task of spotting such potential cannot be delayed and must begin immediately at the local level.
Emphasising the role of elected representatives, PM Modi said initiatives like the MP Sports Festival can become powerful platforms to discover raw talent from villages, towns, and smaller cities. He urged MPs to treat sports development as a shared responsibility and actively support promising athletes in their constituencies.
The Prime Minister stressed that young players need timely guidance, training facilities, and financial backing to reach national and international standards. He said that with consistent mentorship and institutional support, India can build a strong pipeline of athletes capable of making the country proud on the global stage.
