Delhi: Tense and emotional scenes played out in the heart of the national capital after the Unnao rape survivor and her mother were stopped by security forces while protesting against a recent Delhi High Court order granting bail to convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The duo had gathered in Delhi to voice their anguish over the suspension of Sengar’s life sentence, calling the decision a serious threat to their safety.
According to reports, the situation escalated when the survivor’s mother allegedly jumped out of a moving vehicle as paramilitary personnel attempted to move them away from the protest site. Visibly shaken, she told reporters that her family had lost faith in the justice system and feared for their lives following the court order.
In a desperate appeal, the survivor’s mother claimed that security forces forcibly took her daughters in a CRPF vehicle and warned that the family was no longer safe. She demanded immediate cancellation of Sengar’s bail, stating that without it, they saw no future for themselves. Her emotional statements reflected the deep fear and distress the family continues to endure years after the crime.
Earlier, the survivor herself strongly criticised the High Court’s decision, describing it as “kaal” (death) for her family. She announced plans to challenge the order in the Supreme Court, asserting that justice had once again slipped out of reach. Speaking to news agencies, she said the bail order had reopened old wounds and placed her family under renewed danger.
The Delhi High Court, on Tuesday, suspended the life sentence awarded to Sengar in the 2017 rape case and granted him bail while his appeal remains pending. The court imposed strict conditions, including barring Sengar from entering within a five-kilometre radius of the survivor’s residence and prohibiting any form of threat or contact. The order also stated that any violation would result in automatic cancellation of bail.
Despite the bail in the rape case, Sengar continues to remain in jail as he is serving a separate 10-year sentence in connection with the custodial death of the survivor’s father, in which bail has not been granted.
The case, which shook the nation, dates back to 2017 when the survivor was a minor. Sengar, an expelled BJP leader, was convicted in December 2019.
