Mumbai Air Turns Unhealthy Again as Pollution Levels Rise, Residents Advised Caution

Mumbai: Mumbai residents began their Tuesday under a blanket of polluted air, with air quality slipping into the unhealthy zone across large parts of the city. Monitoring data showed that pollution levels were particularly high during the early morning hours, a period when air circulation remains weak and emissions tend to accumulate.

Fine particulate matter continued to be the biggest concern. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations stayed well above recommended safety limits, making breathing uncomfortable for many, especially those with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Doctors warn that even short-term exposure at these levels can trigger coughing, eye irritation, and fatigue.

Other pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide were present but remained within moderate ranges, while sulphur dioxide and ozone stayed relatively low. Despite this, the dominance of dust and fine particles kept overall air quality poor.

Medical experts have urged citizens to reduce outdoor physical activity, especially during peak traffic hours. Vulnerable groups including children, senior citizens, and people with existing health issues have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible. The use of masks and air purifiers is being suggested for those experiencing breathing discomfort.

Weather conditions offered little help in dispersing pollutants. Cloudy skies, mild humidity, and moderate winds resulted in stagnant air, allowing pollution to linger. While temperatures remained pleasant, limited airflow reduced the city’s ability to clear suspended particles.
